Thomas van der Sommen
Thomas van der Sommen specialises in tort law. He focuses on human rights violations by governments and multinational corporations, in particular in the context of armed conflict and arms trade. In addition, his practice concentrates on the intersection of human rights and (new) digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms and autonomous weapons. Examples include AI systems used to develop weapons, the militarization of data storage, and Big Tech companies using discriminatory algorithms.
Thomas has experience in litigating before the Dutch courts, including summary proceedings and so called turbo expedited appeals, proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union, and cases before the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights. Thomas has been working as a lawyer since 2021.
