On 21 September 2026, our beloved former colleague Göran Sluiter passed away.
Göran was associated with our firm as lawyer and partner from 2010 to 2024. Additionally, he was Professor of International Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and a Professor of Criminal Law at the Open University.
Göran was involved in many high-profile cases throughout his career as a lawyer. For instance, he was one of the lawyers in the so-called 'Piracy Case' in which several Somali men stood trial in the Netherlands for piracy charges. He also acted in various extradition and surrender cases, such as those involving Rwandan genocide suspects for whom he succesfully managed to prevent extradition. Göran was also known as victims' counsel. As such, he represented a large number of injured parties in the second criminal trial against Dutch politician Geert Wilders, which case ultimately resulted in a conviction. He also acted as lawyer for the activist group KOZP (Kick Out Zwarte Piet) in the trial against the so-called 'Blockade Frisians' (Blokkeerfriezen), and represented a group of Ethiopian victims of war crimes in a case against their former torturer in The Hague. Göran also acted as lawyer before the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and headed the defense team for Ao An together with Mom Luch and Richard Rogers at the ECCC in Cambodia.
Dutch newspaper Trouw published an interview with Göran this summer, in which he reflected on his life and rich carreer. The interview can be read here (in Dutch).
Even after he stopped practicing law, Göran remained involved with our firm as an inspiration, sparring partner and friend. We remember him as a creative, skilled and passionate lawyer who liked to tread off the beaten path. Above all, he was a dedicated colleague and a warm personality whom we will miss dearly.
We wish his wife and children much strength in dealing with this loss.
