Today the Court of Appeal in The Hague acquitted a Syrian refugee for the alleged commission of a war crime in Syria. The Court of Appeal held that the (minimum) requirements for a war crime were not met, particularly not when it concerned the gravity of the crime. The Court of Appeal did come to a conviction for membership of Ahrar-Al-Sham, which is considered a terrorist organisation. For this crime the Court imposed a penalty of five years and six months imprisonment. The client was represented by  Tamara Buruma and Goran Sluiter. More information will follow.
